Iceland retains no. 1 spot in Global Peace rankings
  • Iceland has remained atop of the Global Peace rankings
  • Average level of global peacefulness declined for 4th straight year
  • Europe remains world’s most peaceful region

Iceland has yet again been ranked the most peaceful country in the world, with New Zealand and Austria coming in at number 2 and 3 respectively. In total, 6 European countries are included in the top 10 (Iceland, Austria, Ireland, Portugal and Czech Republic), reinforcing the sentiment that Europe is, on average, the safest continent.

However the complete Global Peace Ranking 2018 highlights that the level of global peacefulness has declined for the 4th consecutive year by a cumulative total of. 0.27. In total, the 92 countries had a reduction in their rankings while only 71 showed an improvement.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) once again remained the world’s least safe region with no countries from this region present in the top 40. According to the study, the most prominent reasons for the fall in global peace were “increased terrorist activity, intensification of conflict in the Middle East, rising regional tension in Eastern Europe and Northeast Asia, and increasing number of refugees and heightened political tensions in Europe and the US.”
